Yet if the classified ad world is a market — and it most certainly is one at heart, after all — then you need to consider that this place of commerce doubles as a battle ground over days traded for grandiose experiences. Whether buying or just selling, the tale of what can unfold from placing a classified ad in The Daily Sun is often the realm of funny and terrifying strangers-can-be-real-f-ing-snakes style stories. In this blog post: the most striking of these living-real experiences from classified ads, as well some hard truths found on top… and what happened through them.

The Unlikely Friendship

The sale was a matter-of-fact as selling someone an old ZAR50 bicycle. But what was thought to only be a sale lead into the start of a strange friendship that lasted year after conflicting style-related situations.

When Steve advertised his reliable old machine for sale, he did not expect a great deal. He just had a new one and wanted to clear space in his garage. The next morning he received a message, from a woman named Linda to buy it for her son. The sale would take place in a public park that they met up at.

As Steve was helping Linda load the bike into her car, they talked. They talked, told stories about family and their jobs and how they both love to ride. Easy going conversation, it went like a breeze & of course soon without they realizing the exchange was almost for an hour. Linda was one of them and she said I have not been long in this place yet there are very few people that i knew Steve spotted another female cyclist and invited her for a spin on his Sunday morning group ride.

Linda had said yes, and over the next few months she became close to Steve. They started riding together, and Linda introduced Slootman to her teenage son who began joining them for rides regularly. But what had started as small service extended into so much more, friendship that made them both better people for having intersected stories—for one single simple transaction first reminded them of life's most precious interactions–human touch!

The Unexpected Windfall

A Story about Maria: A lucky lady won unexpected monies through publication of ads. Her late grandfather's old camera was up for sale. Her camera was pristine, but Maria had no idea what it might be worth. She posted it for a ZAR100 and hoped to get this car adopted by someone who would take care of it

When Tim, a camera enthusiast who spotted the ad online saw it, he immediately noticed that this is an absolutely minty early unit of one of best known brands out there. He was well aware that the camera was worth WAY more than ZAR100, but didn't want to take Maria for a ride. Instead he gave her a respectable sum for the camera.

Tim contacted Maria and informed her of the camera's value as a collector item with some being sold for several thousands dollars. When I arrived, he offered me the truck for just ZAR5k—a steal for its age and rarity. Maria, for one, was in disbelief — she had no clue the camera carried such a hefty pricetag. Also, she accepted Tim's and sold this one.

It wasn't over with that though. Months later, Tim texted Maria again to invite her to a photography show he was putting on. He had her grandfather's camera on display as a historical photographic artifact. Maria was moved when she visited the exhibition and saw her grandfather's camera among celebrated artistic creations. A typical garage sale was instantly turned into an actual victory, a jackpot if you will in both money and ledger.

The Rescue Mission

And not ALL aired events involving a classified are financial--it's about transformation, and success. Jake (loves animals) saw an ad for a rescue dog who needed to be saved and adopted through classifieds, as an example.

Jake was browsing the pets on a classifieds website until he found one that read, “FFree Dog—Urgent.” It was an ad for a 7-year-old German Shepherd who needed to be rehomed asap. A dog is abandoned when the owner cannot be bothered to take it with them when moving. Then there was the inevitable urgency that seemed to always set Jake off.
